It’s September and the beginning of the 2023 NEA Big Read event across New Hampshire! The Gale Library, in partnership with New Hampshire Humanities, is one of fifty NH libraries participating in this community read of The Bear by NH author Andrew Krivak. The NEA Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest.

Reading one book together as a community, like this NH Big Read, invites us to explore how we share stories, understand our world, and envision a better future for New Hampshire. This Big Read begins in September and continues through November with opportunities at the Gale Library, other NH libraries, and NH organizations for discussing the book and participating in programs inspired by the book, both in-person and virtually.

First, visit the library to pickup a copy of ”The Bear” that you may read, keep, share, or return, while supplies last. Prefer audiobooks? Download or stream the audiobook with NH Downloadable Books and your library card (contact the library if you need the prefix to login).

Next, choose which community programs you will attend!

Learn about Black Bear Happenings in NH on Monday, October 2 at 6 p.m. at the Country Pond Fish and Game Club, where a NH Fish and Game Steward will share a brief history of black bears in NH, the Wildlife & Sport Fish Restoration Program’s impact, and the current management of black bears in NH.

On Wednesday, October 25 at 6:30 p.m. come join us at the Newton Town Hall as we discuss the book with Dr. Kiki Berk from Southern New Hampshire University.

On Saturday, September 23, NH Humanities will partner with the McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center for a planetarium show in which participants will experience how the daughter in the book used the stars to track the passage of time. Then on October 14 the author Andrew Krivak will have a book-signing in Concord with a public discussion available in-person or virtually.

For more details about these programs and others offered by NH Humanities and nearby libraries, visit our Big Read 2023 page here.

It’s Book Sale time! The Friends of the Gale Library are holding their annual Book Sale on Saturday, September 30 from 8:30 a.m. — 2 p.m. at Estabrooks Garage located at 26 S. Main Street in Newton.
